DAR ES SALAAM HOUSE FIVE

House 5 - Concrete Block and Metal

Located in the Kigamboni Region, this house is constructed using concrete blocks for the walls and metal for the gabled roof that extends past the walls in the front to provide a kind of porch area. Wire mesh acts as an insect screen in all of the window openings; however, this wire mesh is not perfectly stretched and contains holes that can allow the transmission of mosquitos into the home.

Individual Blocks

The walls of this house are constructed using concrete blocks.

Openings

A gap is present between the walls and roof and at the roof’s apex. The windows have no screens and are merely covered by cloth sheets.

Interior Spaces

The house is split into 2 rooms by a plastered concrete block wall. Both rooms are only accessible from the outside, via two aluminum doors with rudimentary locks. Both rooms have cement-plastered walls and contain raised bed frames, mattresses, and bed nets.
