7 UNCC Students Spend 6 Weeks in Tanzania

Funded by the National Science Foundation, Prof. Liz McCormick and Prof. Brett Tempest from the Univeristy of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) had the opportunity of taking seven students to Tanzania over the summer to understand the use of masonry as a link between accessible construction, energy, human comfort, and mosquito control. While embarking on this research, the students surveyed ten houses with five houses each in Dar es Salaam and Ifakara. Visits were also made to various brickyards to understand the context of housing in Tanzania and get acclamitized with how construction operates in the country. Over the next two years, more work will be done regarding this project in order to find even more viable solutions to mosquito control using masonry.
