Entomological Happenings

“In pursuit of the sustainable development goals, an important additional characteristic for such new tools is that they should be integrated in people’s way of life, such that associated gains may exceed disease prevention to also include improvements in overall well-being.”

– Dr Fredros Okumu, Director of Science at the Ifakara Health Institute, Tanzania

An international scope

Belo Horizonte, Brazil

Dengue is increasing its reach worldwide. Brazil provides an ideal habitat for the relevant mosquito species. Densely packed, peri-urban environments offer micro-climates full of niches to thrive within, which makes mosquito control a community affair. Check out our collaboration with the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation who are piloting a high innovative approach using the spontaneous dramatic spectacle of "Happenings" in public spaces.

Ifakara, Tanzania

Malaria kills over 400,000 people a year, with the majority of fatalities occurring in Africa. Check out our ongoing collaboration in Tanzania with the Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) on sustainable solutions to mosquito control rooted in housing infrastructure. We are working with international team members to erect a "demonstration house" at the IHI as a platform to trial prototype designs and provide a "Happenings" site for local users. The process draws heavily on an iterative design method called the charrette.

Project purpose

Bringing together international and local entomologists, architects, social scientists, public health specialists, engineers and artists, we will model novel strategies to tackle the wicked problem of mosquito control in Tanzania and Brazil. The team draws upon long-term interdisciplinary collaborations in these two countries and award-winning work in sustainable design to formulate integrative methodologies and operational frameworks for community-driven innovation.
